Cassidy Villanos is a scientific and botanical illustrator whose work bridges art, science, and design thinking to create compelling, research-driven visuals. With a BFA in Illustration with a concentration in Natural Science and Scientific Illustration from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Cassidy specializes in medical, botanical, and natural science illustration, using a mix of traditional and digital techniques, including watercolor, graphite, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Cassidy's work is deeply rooted in design thinking, applying a problem-solving approach to visually communicate complex scientific concepts with clarity and accuracy. Their interdisciplinary practice emphasizes observation, research, and iteration, ensuring that each illustration serves both an educational and aesthetic purpose. This approach has made their work valuable for publishers, scientific institutions, and freelance clients, transforming data and research into accessible, engaging imagery.
Beyond illustration, Cassidy has experience in education, community outreach, and administrative leadership. As an Adjunct Instructor at the College for Creative Studies, they developed and led workshops in collaboration with institutions like the Henry Ford Cancer and Research Center, Belle Isle Conservatory, and Cranbrook Gardens, focusing on art therapy, botanical illustration, and public engagement with natural science. Their background also includes gallery curation, curriculum development, and student mentorship, fostering creative growth in both academic and community settings.
Cassidy’s passion for environmental science, biological studies, and historical art movements—including a study abroad experience in Florence, Italy, focusing on Renaissance Art History—deepens their artistic perspective. Their work not only documents the natural world but also explores the aesthetic relationship between the human body and nature, a theme central to their artistic thesis.
Currently based in Detroit, MI, Cassidy shares their creative process and artwork on Instagram @cassidyvillanos. They are available for commissions, collaborations, and professional inquiries, working with scientific publishers, research institutions, museums, and environmental organizations to visually communicate knowledge through art.
